The 69 Eyes announce new album and European Tour
They are the band that time forgot. They are the band that refuses to die. They are the Helsinki Vampires.
Conceived in Finland in 1989, dark rockers The 69 Eyes have come a long way and shaped the genre of ‘Goth ‘n’ Roll’ like no other. With several platinum selling albums like Blessed Be and Paris Kills released around the millennium, the quintet not only reached #1 of the single and album charts in their home country of Finland, but also plunged the world into their sinful cosmos of love, death and eternal melancholy and outlived any other band emerging from the goth hype of the early 2000s. By developing their sound further into sleaze rock on Devils (2004) and Angels (2007) and not shying away from pitch black Elvis allusions in singer Jyrki 69’s majestic dark voice and unique dance moves on stage, the band established their worldwide following by relentlessly touring Europe, America, Asia and Australia.
This year, they celebrate their 30th band anniversary but don't even think of slowing down and have now announced their new studio piece West End that will be released on Friday, the 13th of September via Nuclear Blast. This 12th full-length record, featuring top notch guest vocalists such as Cradle Of Filth's Dani Filth, Wednesday 13 and Beastö Blancö's Calico Cooper, consists of 11 up-tempo rock anthems full of heaviness, black memento mori moments and dark humour and sees the band dancing in the ruins of our world:
“The title »West End« evokes a dark image – when something dies, something new comes up and we all have to change in order to stay alive", singer Jyrki 69 explains. "I feel like this planet is on some turning point. The end of the western world is near and the question is: What is happening when the west ends..? The title has multiple meanings for us… but be assured it has definitely nothing to do with The Pet Shop Boys or London..."
As first taster for the new album, The 69 Eyes reveals the music video directed by Los Angeles-based Vicente Cordero (3 Teeth, "Room 37- The Mysterious Death of Johnny Thunders" movie) for their new single '27 & Done'. The clip features excerpts from the horror film 'The 27 Club' by Cleopatra Entertainment which will be out on June 13, 2019.
"The track deals with the idea of Hollywood and everyone coming there to make their dreams come true, but it’s very seldom that they succeed and this is something you can see there everywhere", Jyrki 69 contemplates. "It’s a place that makes you desperate and I wanted to get these dark vibes into the song. But on the other hand the track is also a celebration of life – we should be excited to be here and everybody’s a legend and they should realise that we should enjoy what we do instead of worry what other people think.”
The pre-order for the physical and digital editions of the album will start soon.
But of course there's even more to come - because what would a 30-year-anniversary celebration be without the announcement of a huge European tour? After having returned to the United States this spring for their first tour there in ten years, the Helsinki Vampires will also haunt Europe.
Ville Valo & Agents: That inexplicable Badding magic
”On this here worksite somebody up there really loved us”
The album Ville Valo & Agents, based on songs by Rauli ’Badding’ Somerjoki, is out now. Prior to its release we have had the chance to enjoy the first two single picks Orpolapsi kiurun and Ikkunaprinsessa.
Ville Valo debuted as the singer for Agents already twenty years ago in the TV show Laulava sydän. The HIM vocalist’s soulful interpretations won over the TV audience, and especially, guitarist Esa Pulliainen – the seeds for a future collaboration were sown right there, right then. After Pulliainen came across some Badding demo tapes hidden in the darkest corner of his drawer, this unique project was finally born.
The album Ville Valo & Agents contains previously unheard Badding compositions as well as a handful of his much loved classics like Paratiisi, Ikkunaprinsessa and Tähdet tähdet.
”The recording itself went very smoothly, even remarkably smoothly, if you ask me,” producer Pulliainen reveals. ”I guess sometimes things just click right from the word go. This sadly doesn’t happen that often but on this here worksite somebody up there really loved us!
Plus we were well prepared, of course. I had been subconsciously working on the material for three years before I even started thinking arrangements and such. The same goes for Ville: he didn’t have to jump on a fast moving train but had all the time he needed to really dive into the material. I mean, it’s Ville who has had the toughest job here as he had to get under Badding’s skin and at the same time make damn sure he remains himself. My job was easy – I just played the guitar the way I’ve done for the past 40 years.
I remember being in the studio with Badding. The most exciting moment was when it was time to record his vocals – would he or would he not elevate the songs with that strange magic of his? And, lo and behold, he always did! Ville Valo managed to do the same on this album and, let me tell you, that’s worth more than a pot of gold! I’m very proud and happy on behalf of the whole gang.”
Ville Valo & Agents made their live debut at the Emma Gala (the Finnish equivalent of the Grammy Awards) held in early February. Their one-off collaboration continues in the form of a tour that kicks off in March and finishes soon after some handpicked festival appearances in the summer. Most of the shows are already sold out.
VILLE VALO & AGENTS TOUR TO KICK OFF IN MARCH 2019
The band will make their live debut at the annual Emma Gala on Feb 2, 2019.
The anticipated self-titled album by Ville Valo & Agents, based on songs by the late, legendary Finnish singer Rauli ’Badding’ Somerjoki, will be released on Feb 15, 2019. The release will be followed by a tour kicking off in March. The live set will include fresh interpretations of such Badding classics as Tähdet Tähdet, Paratiisi and Ikkunaprinsessa, as well as the songs from the album including the first single Orpolapsi Kiurun.
”The Agents have been a working band since 1979, so this upcoming Ville Valo & Agents tour is tour number… uh, I don’t know, lost my count already”, guitar legend Esa Pulliainen chuckles. ”I myself started playing live in ’74, when I was barely seventeen - that means that next summer marks my 45th anniversary on the road. The venues and the roadside views have become pretty familiar during those years but I confess that this time ’round I’ll surely have a few butterflies in my stomach. We’ll be touring with the Black Prince himself, Ville Valo!”
The tour will be a one-off collaboration. This means that these upcoming shows offer a truly unique opportunity to witness Ville Valo & Agents live on stage. For the first and last time ever.
”It will be a pleasure and an honour to serve under Captain Pulliainen – and his merry crew! – on this one-time-only exploratory journey through the Finnish wilderness, heading into the blue and white heart of melancholy”, Ville Valo phrases.
Ville Valo & Agents will appear live for the very first time at Emma Gaala, the Finnish equivalent of Grammy Awards, held at Hartwall Arena on Feb 2, 2019.
HIGHLY ANTICIPATED VILLE VALO & AGENTS ALBUM RELEASED ON FEB 15, 2019
The anticipated self-titled album by Ville Valo & Agents, based on songs by the late, legendary Finnish singer Rauli ’Badding’ Somerjoki, will be released on Feb 15, 2019. On the album cover singer Ville Valo is holding in his hands a c-cassette with ’Badding’s songs’ scribbled on it.
”That particular cassette was our guiding star”, Ville Valo smiles. ”Hidden somewhere among the tape hiss were the rudimentary melodies of the songs Orpolapsi kiurun and Tuutulaulu - gently crooned by Badding - and Monsieur Pulliainen went and discovered them. It goes without saying that this Holy Grail from Somero deserves its center stage spot!”
The pre-sale of the Ville Valo & Agents album will start tomorrow, Friday Nov 23.
The band Agents, led by guitarist Esa Pulliainen and the frontman of the recently disbanded HIM, Ville Valo, collaborated for the first time nearly twenty years ago. Last year Pulliainen came across some previously unheard demo cassettes by Badding and this resulted in a long-awaited reunion. The first single off the album, Orpolapsi kiurun, was released in September.
